THE STORY BEHIND US
EFIM GRABOY | FOUNDER
In 2017, was my first visit to Serbia, I participated in a summer film camp “Interaction”, as a director. This experience changed my life and artistic path. I met an inspiring community of people who love cinema and art. The land of this region resonated with me.
In 2020, during a meditation on a mountain in Israel, I had a vision that I should build an art residency in nature. So I followed. Serbia became the natural place to do it. In 2021, I left Tel Aviv and moved to Gardinovci, just a few months before Russia invaded Ukraine. And from the very first days of the war, I began hosting refugees and non-returnees from Russia. So, in these overwhelming new circumstances, over the past two and a half years, we've been preparing the ground together, and everyone who lived here contributed to this space. We've already started building the art residency. And now we've reached the point where everyone - our team, the village residents - is ready for the official launch. This means moving towards free art, towards art full of revolutionary spirit, anti-capitalist art, and avant-garde art.
Our young team and community grow as time goes on. It's a blessing to establish this project with Nikolai N. Viktorov, Smiljana Curic, Natalia Vtulkina, Lena Sibirtseva, MIlena Smigic, Ana Ostojic, Sergei Kackin, Daria Holden. Our mission is to break boundaries and free our residents from their needs so that they can fully dedicate themselves to their art. Firstly, we aim to foster the evolution of humanity by integrating nature into art and our daily experiences. Secondly, we strive to promote art and cultural diversity in rural areas, facilitating an exchange between artists and local communities. We are interested in supporting artists who do not fit the criteria of the contemporary cultural business. Therefore, we do not impose specific conditions for participation. No age restrictions, subject limitations, nationality requirements, or stylistic constraints exist.
Our residency should become a place of neutralizing force, a mediator between forces: the forces of nature and the forces of civilization, which are moving forward, sweeping away everything in their path, including art and humanity. And this space is a connecting point between civilization-advancement and nature. Visitors and locals symbolize these two forces, and they must meet each other. This way, we can help balance the world;
WHERE ARE WE AND WHY?
Why Gardinovci? Because it's an unconventional location. I think it's cool to build something different in a place where there hasn't been anything like it before. It's an opportunity to see the world differently for everyone - both locals and those who come here.
Nestled along the Danube River, its natural islands and a serene forest, lies Gardinovci, an ethnic village
with a population of around 850 inhabitants.
This hidden place embodies the cultural heritage
of Vojvodina and Serbia, where the 21st-century
collides with tradition.
The villagers embrace a simple existence-centered
around agriculture, tending to animals, and living
off the land.
Gardinovci is a village between two major cities in
Serbia: Belgrade and Novi Sad. This allows for convenient communication with artists and experts from various industries, inviting them to become mentors for different events at Vice Versa Triangle. The
village’s inhabitants are Serbs and individuals from
the former Yugoslavia.
